The Smiths Tour 2026: About Band
The Smiths were an English rock band formed in Manchester in 1982. The band members were Morrissey, Johnny Marr, Andy Rourke, and Mike Joyce. Morrissey was the lead singer, and Johnny Marr played guitar. Marr and Morrissey also wrote most of the band’s songs together.
The Smiths became one of the most important bands in British independent music during the 1980s. They signed with independent label Rough Trade Records in 1983. Their first album, The Smiths, was released in 1984.
The band’s music focused on guitars, bass, and drums. They mixed 1960s rock with post-punk sounds. This style was different from the popular synth-pop music at the time.
Many of their singles reached the UK Top 20 chart. Every one of their studio albums made it into the UK Top Five. Their second album, Meat Is Murder, reached number one in the UK in 1985.
The band also achieved international success. Their albums The Queen Is Dead and Strangeways, Here We Come both reached the Top 20 across Europe.
In 1986, the band added a second guitarist, Craig Gannon. The group later split in 1987 due to internal tensions. After the breakup, band members were involved in legal disputes over royalties.
The band refused to reunite despite receiving many offers. Andy Rourke, the bassist, died in 2023.
